I may not have completed the first Buzzword Reading Challenge prompt during the month of January, but I did start it on January 31st so it counts! I will admit this happened by chance because I began reading the book without remembering that January’s prompt words were “life” and “death”. Maybe that in itself was a small bit of big magic?
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐

This book delivers exactly what it says in the title. Elizabeth Gilbert reveals what she views as “big magic” in the world of creativity. And yes, she does mean actual magic, it’s not just a metaphor.
Now, whether you are creatively inclined or not, this claim might seem like a stretch. But stick with her because I promise Gilbert’s evidence is fascinating. Plus, who are we to say there’s nothing inherently magical about creativity? Sitting down and writing out some words, playing some notes, or singing a quick tune all somehow lead to a piece of work that can move people’s souls, minds, and bodies and make them feel genuine human emotions. People can actually do that! Yes, it takes work, and for most it takes time, but it is pretty crazy to think that things that are mundane and meaningless on their own can be turned into something that could change someone’s life all because of a little something called creativity.
Gilbert also expertly inspires the reader to live their creative life in spite of all doubts and challenges. If you are someone who wants to live creatively, but are afraid you won’t succeed or don’t think you know how, read this book and let Elizabeth be the person to root for you and give you the push you need to just go for it. Just start!
“A creative life is an amplified life. It’s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life. Living in this manner—continually and stubbornly bringing forth the jewels that are hidden within you—is a fine art, in and of itself.”
Who should read this: Anyone who wants to be creative or feels passionate about something. This book isn’t just for writers (though Elizabeth speaks from the perspective of one), but for anyone who has the desire to make things, be them tangible or not. It’s for anybody at all who wants to create anything. I’d say it’s also for anyone who just wants to feel inspired. Let this book be that bit of inspiration you’re looking for.
I’ll also admit this is a reread for me. I first read it 3 years ago, via audiobook, and now the second time around I loved and appreciated it even more. I first got the recommendation from author Katie Wismer and she says she rereads this every year! I don’t know if I’ll be listening to Elizabeth Gilbert’s voice quite as often, but this is definitely not the last time I will be reading Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear.
If you pick this up, please come back to share your thoughts and what creative project you’re working on! I know this book always gives me the kick I need to get back to my writing. Also, if you’re participating in Buzzwordathon, what was your January read?
