Emily Henry: A Chance at Redemption?

If you’re not on Emily’s Grocery List (you should definitely sign up here), you might not be aware that she announced her next book! It’s called Funny Story and it’s set to come out April 23, 2024 so mark your calendar. Now if you’ve been around, you may be aware that Beach Read is my #1 Emily book and I found Happy Place to be extremely disappointing. You can read my review here if you haven’t already.

So why do I think Emily Henry can redeem herself with her new book? Let’s start with Funny Story‘s description:

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak.

Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads —Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?

I mean what more could we ask for? Daphne’s a children’s librarian, Miles is “scruffy and chaotic” (sign me up), they’re roommates (some forced proximity-esque action please), they could not be more opposite which is just setting up for a great relationship, and last but not least, they sort of kind of maybe fake date online which… we know where that’s going to end up. It all sounds great to me and will hopefully rekindle the love I first had for Emily Henry’s writing.

I’ve already added this to my TBR and am eagerly awaiting the moment I can download Funny Story to my kindle. Let me know if you’re as hyped as I am for the new book and also if there are any authors you keep on reading even though you keep getting disappointed by their work? I just can’t seem to stop!
